Claudio Mariotto is the fourth generation of a family that has been making wine in the hills of Tortona since 1920, when his great-grandfather Bepi established the family winery. Today, Claudio runs the estate alongside his partner Rossana, brother Mauro and mother Piera, continuing a family tradition built on an intimate connection with the vineyards and a deep respect for the character of the Tortona hills. Working across vineyards in Tortona and Sarezzano, the family’s approach is meticulous and hands-on, with careful attention given to every stage from the vineyard through to ageing in the cellar.
Claudio’s defining passion, however, is Timorasso, a native variety that had fallen out of favour in the region before he began working with it seriously in the late 1990s. Recognising its extraordinary potential, he reshaped the winery around the grape, determined to show that Timorasso could be a serious, age-worthy expression of the Tortona hills rather than simply a local rarity. Today, Mariotto is one of the region’s leading champions of the variety, producing wines with remarkable freshness, minerality and personality while helping establish Timorasso as an important ambassador for the identity and culture of the Colli Tortonesi.
