2018 Ca'Rome' Barbaresco 'Rio Sordo'

Producer: Ca’Rome’

Grape: Nebbiolo

Region: Piedmont, Italy

Zone: Barbaresco

Producer Info: Ca’ is short for ‘casa’ – home. Ca’Rome’ is first and foremost home to Romano Marengo and his family. It may well be the spiritual home of fine Piedmontese winemaking. The Marengo family venture started in 1980, when patriarch Romano founded the company. Thirty years of wine industry experience gave Romano the impetus to produce his own range of wines, perfect his methods and pass them on to the next generation, who continues to carefully manage every phase of the production, starting with sourcing fruit from historic family-owned vineyards, and bringing these incredible wines to market with a highly contagious optimism. Family values – quality, honesty, respect for tradition, exploration, and international air – constitute the core of Ca’Rome’s mission.

A Sip With Mercato: Looking at it, it almost shimmers with an intense garnet core and a bright ruby rim. Wines of Barbaresco show a more feminine side of Nebbiolo, with softer tannins, delicate fruit, and a sophisticated perfume. Chirpy and bright, highlighting floral (rose, lavender and violet), cherry, raspberry, spice and minty menthol flavours. Each sip bares a striking acidity and drying, powdery tannins, with earthy graphite undertones that balance the fruit and floral palate. This vibrant and harmonious drop is a joy now, but will be better in a year or two.

Production: The hand harvested grapes were destemmed and macerated for 15 days. Malolactic conversion was completed before the end of winter. The wine was aged for 24 months, partly in 25 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. It was further aged in bottle for at least 10 months.

Alcohol (%): 14.5 – 15%
