Product: The Cavanna cru epitomises Luigi Giordano’s purist winemaking style and constitutes the only single-vineyard cru of its kind on the market. Floral and red berry fruit meld with sweet spice and earthy characters. It has wild berry, refreshing dried mint notes and a gamey quality adding a rustic charm. It’s complete with dusty tannins and a lively acidity that linger.

A number of wineries take grapes from this cru, though Luigi Giordarno are the only ones to make a single vineyard bottling. Red cherry, strawberry and cream, a little spice, lively perfume. Medium-bodied, red fruits, pumice stone tannin, succulent, such poise and finesse, and a long finish. Not as concentrated as the other crus from this producer in 2019, though nevertheless, a beautiful wine offering charm and great drinking appeal. - 94 pts. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Producer Info: The Luigi Giordano estate was established in the early 19th Century by Giovanni Giordano. This was an era when the Italian wine industry was struggling with several challenges and going through newly industrial, social, and economic changes. Giovani’s son, Luigi decided to vinify the grapes himself after having grown and sold them for many years. And so, in 1960, the Luigi Giordano wines were born. His decision to highlight the potential of the terroir and go down the path of quality winemaking was instrumental in the estate’s success and paved the way for many other Barbaresco producers of his time.

Today, Luigi Giordano is the only fifth-generation winery to own vineyards planted in some of Barbaresco’s most prestigious crus, including Asili, Montestefano and Cavanna. Silvia and Laura, Luigi’s daughters now run the estate. They’re assisted by Laura’s son, Matteo Rocca. The estate boasts over 7 hectares of vineyards, most dedicated to “denominazione di origine” status Barbaresco of crus that made Luigi Giordano’s renown. Matteo cultivates classic indigenous varieties, including the noble Nebbiolo, its generous counterparts, Dolcetto and Barbera, along with Freisa and more recently Arneis, the only white and one of the most popular Piedmontese whites on the international wine scene.

Matteo’s ambition is guided by a deep respect for his grandfather’s elegant and loyally traditional style. Long maceration time on skins and maturation in large botti are the defining features of wines that gain in definition and detail every year, continuing to honour the impressive sites they hail from. We trust that Matteo’s inaugural Barbarescos from elite MGA crus will bolster your passion for Barbaresco’s exceptional terroir as much as they did ours.
