Producer Info:

The Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo is based in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto – just few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. It’s a family-run winery, now in the capable hands of Giorgio – Giovanni’s son – the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Giuseppe, but the real turn over came with his son Giovanni who bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo. The soil of these vineyards, a compact calcareous marl, is rich in micro-nutrients. Which together with the unique microclimate of the Langhe region, creates a perfect environment for the growing of the Nebbiolo grape. It is a vigorous and difficult grape which can create amazing wines with powerful aromas and great aging potential.

Today the Sordo family owns 53 hectares, spread out in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba.

Sordo is unique: it is the only winery in the world that can boast 8 different kinds of Barolo crus, whose vineyards are located in the areas of 5 different municipalities in the Barolo wine district.

Tasting Note:

The vineyard of Gabutti is to be found in a subzone of an area defined as ‘premium category’ because of its excellent quality. It is among the most attractive and prestigious ones in Serralunga d’Alba.

An intense, deep garnet red colour with ruby shades is the sign that a great evolution is expected. Perfectly brilliant, the rivulets of legs and tears coursing the sides of the glass indicate full body, structure and a good alcohol content.

The bouquet is austere, noble, full, expansive and lingering. The robust yet restrained sensations of oak are perceptible and notes of mature fruit and fragrance of alpine flowers complete the nose. A subtle presence of resin brings sweet spice tones and peach leaves to the fore.

At a first taste, the initial sensation of intense warmness gives way to the agreeable, sweet-tending tannins. The sapidity is typical of the terroir. Perfumes and sensations already perceived through the nose are amplified and confirmed into the mouth. Fine structure, harmony and balance – combined with lingering aroma and complexity – are the premises of a great longevity.
