Sharing a boarder with Slovenia, Austria and Veneto has led to diverse mixture of cultures and cuisines that are wholly unique to region of Fruili Venzia Giulia. The influence is obvious with dumplings and soups the traditional option over pasta. Like Veneto, polenta and rice is also commonplace. Slovenian influences are seen in the use of game and fowl. This is the birthplace of the famous DOP San Daniele Prosciutto commonly referred to as the king of hams.
